Right to work in Sweden

What documents do I need to prove my right to work in Sweden? It depends on your citizenship. If you are a Swedish or EU/EEA citizen, a valid passport or national ID card is enough — only the expiry date matters. If you are a third-country national, you need a valid residence permit that gives you the right to work in Sweden.
- I do not have a passport – what can I use instead? Provide both a copy of your Swedish driving licence or Skatteverket ID card and a population registration certificate (personbevis) from Skatteverket. The two documents are needed together: the licence or ID card for identity, the personbevis for your registered status.
- I am a third-country national – what do I need? A valid residence permit that gives you the right to work in Sweden. The permit must be valid when you submit it, and you are responsible for keeping track of its expiry date.
- What happens if my residence permit is about to expire? Apply for an extension with Migrationsverket in good time. If you are employed by Truster, we contact you before your permit expires and ask whether you have applied. You must then send Truster proof of your application — see the next question for what the document needs to show.
- I have applied to extend my residence permit – what do I need to provide? The confirmation you receive from the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) that your application has been received. Send it to Truster. It must include the number Migrationsverket uses to identify your case — this may be called a control number (kontrollnummer), case number (ärendenummer), reference number, or beteckningsnummer.
- Why do I need to provide a reference number for my residence permit application? Truster uses it to verify your application with Migrationsverket and to check whether you may continue working while you wait for a decision. Your name, personal identity number or coordination number alone is often not enough to identify the correct application.
- Can I work while waiting for a decision on my residence permit? In many cases yes, if you applied for the extension before your current permit expired — but it depends on your permit type and how long you have held it, and it is not automatic. Migrationsverket decides. Check your situation on migrationsverket.se or contact Migrationsverket directly, and send Truster your application confirmation so we can verify it.
