Withholding Tax and Tax Cards for Light Entrepreneurs
How does the tax card work with a light entrepreneur's pay?
When you invoice your work through Truster, Truster pays your earnings to you as salary. Withholding tax is applied to the payment — meaning taxes are deducted already at the time of payment, according to the tax rate on your tax card — just like in regular employment. This means you don't need to set aside taxes yourself or pay them afterwards; instead, you receive a net salary in your account with taxes already taken care of.
In practice, the process is effortless: Truster retrieves your tax card details electronically from the Tax Administration, so you usually don't need to submit a paper tax card anywhere. Once your first invoice has been paid and salary payment begins, withholding tax is applied automatically at the correct rate. You'll receive a payslip for every salary payment, showing your gross salary, the tax withheld, and the amount paid into your account.
The same tax card covers all your salary income. If you also do regular employment alongside light entrepreneurship, both employers use the information on the same tax card. That's why it's important that the income estimate on your tax card reflects your total income for the whole year, not just one source of income.
It's worth learning to read three lines on your payslip: gross salary, the pay before taxes; withholding tax, the tax withheld; and net salary, the amount paid into your account. Once these are familiar, you'll immediately notice if the withholding rate doesn't match your expectations, and you can react in time with a revised tax card.
Where do you get a tax card?
The tax card is issued by the Tax Administration, and almost everyone working in Finland already has one. The Tax Administration generates a tax card automatically each year based on previous years' income data, and the card takes effect early in the year. You can view your tax card details by logging in to the OmaVero (MyTax) service at vero.fi.
If you don't yet have a tax card — for example, because you're starting your first job or moving to Finland — you can order one through OmaVero (MyTax) or by contacting the Tax Administration directly. To create the tax card, you'll need an estimate of your annual income and deductions. The estimate doesn't need to be perfect, as you can correct it during the year with a revised tax card.
A regular salary tax card is all a light entrepreneur needs. You don't need entrepreneur's advance taxes or a separate entrepreneur's tax card, because the income you earn through Truster is taxed as salary. This is one of the conveniences of light entrepreneurship compared to running your own company, where taxes are typically paid as advance taxes based on your own estimate.
It's worth checking OmaVero (MyTax) at least once a year, even when nothing has changed. The automatically generated tax card is based on past years, and if your light entrepreneurship has only just begun, the previous year doesn't reflect the coming one well. A few minutes' check at the start of the year saves you from many surprises.
How should you check your tax rate?
Your tax card has two key figures: the base withholding rate and the income ceiling. The base rate applies as long as the salary paid during the year stays below the income ceiling. If the ceiling is exceeded, a higher supplementary rate is withheld from the rest of the year's pay. So simply looking at the percentage isn't enough — what matters most is that your tax card's income estimate matches your actual total income for the year.
A light entrepreneur should calculate the estimate like this: estimate how much you'll invoice during the year and convert it into salary using Truster's calculator. Add any income from employment and other earned income. Compare the total to the income ceiling on your tax card in OmaVero (MyTax). If your estimate clearly exceeds the ceiling, raise the ceiling with a revised tax card before the supplementary rate kicks in.
A good time to check is whenever something changes in your activities: you land a big assignment, the number of gigs increases or decreases, or you start or stop regular employment. Many people also check in midsummer, when half a year of income is already known and it's easier to estimate the rest of the year.
Also remember your deductions: besides income, your tax card's rate is affected by deductions such as travel expenses or income-related expenses. When you report deductions in OmaVero (MyTax) while setting up your tax card, they reduce your withholding throughout the year instead of you only benefiting from a tax refund the following year.
Truster's calculators help with this estimate: enter your planned invoicing, and you'll see an estimate of your salary and the income level you're operating at. The figure from the calculator is a good basis for the income estimate on your tax card, and you can update it whenever your plans change. This way, your tax card, invoicing and personal finances stay aligned throughout the year.
What happens if your income changes?
For a light entrepreneur, income changing mid-year is more the rule than the exception, and there's no need to worry about it. If your income grows larger than estimated and you don't update your tax card, the income ceiling is exceeded and a higher supplementary rate is withheld from the rest of the year's pay. No money is lost, but your net pay for the rest of the year decreases, which can come as a surprise.
If, on the other hand, your income turns out lower than estimated, too much tax is withheld over the course of the year. Overpaid tax is eventually refunded as a tax refund, but until then that money isn't available to you. In either situation, the solution is the same: order a revised tax card from OmaVero (MyTax). A new card can be created with just a few clicks, and it's transmitted electronically to your salary payment.
For a revised tax card, you'll need details of salary already paid and tax already withheld earlier in the year, plus an estimate of income for the rest of the year. Early-year figures are conveniently available from your Truster payslips and from OmaVero (MyTax), which pre-fills income reported to the Incomes Register on your behalf.
Example situation: in spring you do a few gigs and estimate the year will stay small, but in summer you land a big assignment that multiplies your invoicing many times over. At this point, you should update your income estimate in OmaVero (MyTax) right away. The revised tax card takes effect quickly, and the rest of the year's pay is taxed at the correct level, without surprises from the supplementary rate or a hefty tax bill in spring.
Withholding tax with Truster: automatic from start to finish
With Truster, handling your taxes doesn't require any separate action from you. When your customer pays an invoice, Truster calculates your salary, applies withholding tax according to your tax card, and remits the withheld tax to the Tax Administration. At the same time, your salary information is reported to the Incomes Register, from where it automatically flows through to your pre-completed tax return.
That's why checking your tax return in spring is easy: the salary you've received through Truster is already shown in your pre-completed tax return, so you don't need to report it yourself. Your only task is to check the details and add any deductions that apply to your situation, such as a home office deduction or the cost of tools and equipment.
In summary: keep the income estimate on your tax card up to date in OmaVero (MyTax), and Truster will take care of the rest. This way, your net salary stays predictable throughout the year, and there are no unpleasant surprises in spring in the form of a hefty tax bill. For the details of taxation, the best source of information is always the Tax Administration and vero.fi.
If taxation still leaves you with questions, help is available: Truster's customer service can advise you on practical matters related to salary payment and tax cards, while the Tax Administration's guidance service helps with questions about taxation itself. Asking is always faster than fixing a mistake afterwards.
At the heart of it all is one idea: taxation for light entrepreneurs isn't a separate jungle, but the same familiar salary taxation you may have known for years as an employee. What's new is simply that your income varies with your invoicing, which is why keeping your income estimate up to date matters more than before.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a separate tax card for light entrepreneurship?
No, you don't. The income you earn through Truster is taxed as salary, so a regular salary tax card is enough. The same tax card covers both light entrepreneurship and any regular employment, as long as the income estimate reflects all your income for the year combined.
How does Truster get my tax card details?
Truster retrieves your tax card details electronically from the Tax Administration, so you usually don't need to submit the card yourself. If you create a revised tax card in OmaVero (MyTax), the new details are transmitted electronically to salary payment.
What happens if the income ceiling on my tax card is exceeded?
Once the income ceiling is exceeded, a higher supplementary rate is withheld from the rest of the year's pay, which reduces your net salary. You can avoid this by ordering a revised tax card from OmaVero (MyTax) as soon as you notice your income is growing larger than estimated.
Too much tax is being withheld. How do I fix it?
Order a revised tax card from OmaVero (MyTax) and update your income estimate to match reality, and withholding for the rest of the year will decrease. Any tax already overpaid will eventually be refunded as a tax refund, but a revised card gets the money back to you faster.
Does a light entrepreneur's income show up in the pre-completed tax return?
Yes. Truster reports the salary it pays to the Incomes Register, from where it automatically flows through to your pre-completed tax return. Your task is to check the details and add any deductions that apply.
