Frequently asked questions about the calculators

What do these calculators actually calculate?

The take-home calculator shows how much of your invoiced amount ends up in your pocket as salary: it factors in Truster's service fee and an estimated tax withholding. The VAT calculator works out the VAT portion of a price in either direction (from including VAT to excluding, and vice versa).

Is the calculator's result binding?

The calculator's result is an estimate. Your final take-home amount depends on your own tax rate, your YEL situation, and any expense deductions. In the app, you'll see an exact breakdown of every salary payment before you approve it.

Which VAT rate should I use?

The general VAT rate in Finland is 25.5%. Some goods and services fall under reduced VAT rates: choose the rate in the calculator that matches your sales. If you're unsure, you can check the correct rate for your industry on the Tax Administration's website.

How do expenses and mileage allowances affect my take-home amount?

Work-related expenses, mileage allowances and per diems reduce the taxable portion, which increases your take-home amount. In Truster, you log these in the app and they're automatically factored into your salary.

When to use the Work-to-Wallet calculator

Use this calculator whenever you already know the amount you're planning to invoice and want to know how much of it will end up as your salary. It answers one question: if I invoice this amount, how much will I actually take home after the service fee and taxes?

The calculator uses the same payroll engine as real salary payments in Truster. It doesn't give you a polished marketing figure — it calculates the service fee and tax withholding using the same logic as an actual salary calculation. Truster's service fee is 3.99% of your invoicing, or 55 euros per month, whichever suits your situation.

Use the calculator, for example, before sending a quote to a client, when deciding whether a job is worth taking at the offered hourly rate, or when comparing assignments with different price tags.

When to use the VAT calculator

The VAT calculator answers a different question: what's the VAT-inclusive or VAT-exclusive portion of a price? Use it when you need to quote a client a price excluding VAT, when checking the VAT breakdown on a receipt or invoice, or when you want to make sure you're invoicing at the correct VAT rate.

The calculator works in both directions. You can enter the price excluding VAT and see the price including VAT, or enter the price including VAT and see how much of it is VAT. You can select the rate that applies to your industry, since Finland has more than one VAT rate in use.

Use the calculator especially when putting together a quote or price list and want to make sure the figures don't get mixed up. Many errors happen when the VAT-inclusive and VAT-exclusive prices get confused in a quote or invoice.

The calculator's result is an estimate, not a final decision

Both calculators give an indicative result. They help you decide whether a job, quote or price is worth it, but the final amount is only known once the invoice has been paid and the salary is actually calculated.

The Work-to-Wallet calculator doesn't know your exact YEL situation, or whether you have work-related expenses or mileage allowances that can be deducted. These affect your final take-home amount, and often increase it compared with the calculator's estimate.

The same applies to tax withholding. The calculator uses an estimate, but your own tax card determines the exact percentage. When you actually invoice through Truster, you'll see a precise breakdown before you approve the salary payment, and you can check the figures at that point.

How to interpret the calculator's result

  • The calculator shows an estimate, not a binding promise of an amount.
  • The Work-to-Wallet calculator uses the same payroll engine as a real salary payment, but doesn't know your YEL situation or expenses.
  • The VAT calculator gives you the exact final result, as long as you select the correct rate for your industry.
  • Always check the final amount in the app before approving a salary payment or sending a quote to a client.
  • Use the calculators to support your decisions, for example before sending a quote — not as a final price to give to a client.
