Side income without the bureaucracy

A photography gig on the weekend, a website for a friend's business, coaching sessions, a DJ set, social media content for a local shop — side gigs are part of everyday life for many Finns. The question is always the same: how do you invoice for this without setting up a company and learning bookkeeping?

Truster is the answer to exactly that. You invoice your gigs as a light entrepreneur without a Business ID (Y-tunnus), without bookkeeping and without fixed costs. With the commission plan you pay 3.99% only when you actually invoice — months without gigs cost nothing at all. Your account never expires and needs no upkeep, so it can wait for your next gig even for half a year.

Your main job or studies stay exactly as they are: invoicing on the side through Truster doesn't make you an entrepreneur in terms of your employment status, and it doesn't require you to notify your employer.

The barrier to entry is intentionally low. Sending your first invoice doesn't require any decision to become an entrepreneur, no starting capital and no commitment — just verifying your identity and having a gig to invoice for. Many people try the service with a single invoice and find that the threshold for taking on the next gig has dropped for good.

Your taxes get handled correctly — automatically

Taxation of side income is easy to underestimate, and an unpleasant surprise often only shows up on your tax return. With Truster this doesn't happen: your tax card is fetched automatically, and withholding tax is applied to every payment accordingly. You get a payslip for every payment, and your income is reported to the Incomes Register automatically.

You don't need to know anything about VAT — Truster handles that part of the invoicing for you. You can see clearly how much you're invoicing and how much you'll take home, even before you send the invoice.

If a gig involves expenses — say, materials or travel — you scan the receipts into the app and they're automatically taken into account in your taxation. All your receipts stay safely stored in one place.

Study grants, benefits and income limits

The pay Truster pays you is ordinary taxable employment income — the same as from any job. That means it counts toward, for example, the annual income limits for study grants and the income limits for other benefits. It's good to know this in advance, not afterwards.

The upside is that you're in control of the pace: you invoice when you want and see exactly how much you've earned during the year right in the app. As you approach your income limit, you can simply pause invoicing and continue again after the turn of the year. It's worth checking your own limits with Kela — they depend on your situation.

Payslips and your year-to-date earnings are always up to date in the app, so responding to any inquiries is easy — your income details are there in seconds, with nothing to piece together from old emails.

What if your side hustle grows into a profession?

Many Truster users started with a single one-off gig — and a year later found that the side hustle made up half their income. The service is built to grow with you. Once your invoicing becomes regular, the fixed monthly price of €55/month becomes cheaper than the commission, and switching takes just one tap in the app. Note that the monthly price only applies to work that starts while your subscription is paid and active — so activate it before starting the gig and keep it active until you get paid, otherwise a 3.99% commission will be charged on the invoice.

If your work grows into a full-time pursuit, the next steps are ready and waiting: YEL insurance can be set up directly from the app, and when the time comes for your own Business ID (Y-tunnus), our sole proprietorship service handles the setup and bookkeeping — your history and clients come with you. From side gig to profession, with nothing breaking along the way.

Your first invoice in fifteen minutes

Here's how it works in practice: you download the app and verify your identity with online banking credentials — your account is ready instantly, and your tax card is fetched automatically without you submitting anything. Then you create an invoice: for business customers, the client's details are pulled straight from the Finnish Trade Register (YTJ), you write what you did and at what price, and send it. The app shows you right away how much of that amount you'll take home.

When your client pays, you get notified and can withdraw the pay to your account — or let it wait for your next withdrawal. The whole chain from invoice to pay happens in one app, and no step requires prior invoicing experience. If any step leaves you unsure, the AI assistant is right there to help.

What do side gig workers invoice through Truster?

The range is wide: wedding and outdoor photoshoots, websites and small software projects, graphic design, translations and copywriting, personal training sessions and group fitness classes, gigs as a musician or sound engineer, babysitting, cleaning, yard work, alterations, baking orders and handicraft sales.

What they all have in common is the same pattern: you agree on the work, do it, and send an invoice through the app — Truster takes care of taxes, any insurance and the flow of money. You don't need to know in advance which industry you fall under or how your particular gig 'should' be invoiced: the app asks the essential questions, and the AI assistant is there to help if anything is unclear.

And if you're invoicing a private individual instead of a business, that works the same way too — the app automatically guides you through the differences. Truster Turva's accident and liability insurance covers your gigs, so even occasional work is protected from the start.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need my own company?

No — you invoice through Truster as a light entrepreneur without a Business ID (Y-tunnus) or bookkeeping obligations.

How much does occasional invoicing cost?

With the commission plan, 3.99% of your invoiced amount — if you don't invoice, you don't pay anything. For regular invoicing there's a fixed price of €55/month. Note: the monthly price must be paid and activated before the invoiced work starts, and stay active until you get paid — otherwise the invoice won't be covered by the monthly price, and a 3.99% commission will be charged instead.

Does this income affect my study grant or other benefits?

Truster pays you a salary that is taxable income — it counts, for example, toward the income limits for study grants. Check your own limits with Kela before invoicing larger amounts.

How are taxes handled?

Your tax card is fetched automatically — you don't need to submit anything. Withholding tax is applied accordingly to every payment, so there's nothing to remember at tax return time.
