Parental benefit as a freelancer

It all comes down to your SGI

Parental benefit is calculated based on your sickness benefit qualifying income, SGI — that is, the annual income from work you can be expected to earn going forward. This means that what you'll actually receive during parental leave is, in practice, decided long before the leave begins, by what your income from work looks like and how well it's documented.

As a light entrepreneur, your payment is paid out as salary, and salary counts as income from work. That gives you a clear basis for SGI, with payslips showing what you earned and when. Money that isn't salary, such as reimbursement for expenses, doesn't build any protection, on the other hand. Parental benefit is also only calculated up to an upper limit, and there's a minimum level for anyone without sufficient SGI. The exact figures in kronor and days are available from Försäkringskassan (the Swedish Social Insurance Agency).

Your income before the leave matters

Since SGI is based on your income from work, a period with very low income before your leave affects what you'll receive. This isn't an argument for working yourself to exhaustion, but it is an argument for being aware: a long gap in assignments right before a planned parental leave can have an effect that's hard to fix afterwards.

There are rules on SGI protection that are especially relevant for parents, including around the time before the child's birth and during parental leave. The rules are detailed and the conditions vary, so ask Försäkringskassan for guidance based on your situation well in advance. Asking the question several months before your leave is easy — fixing a shortfall afterwards rarely is.

Plan your assignments, not just your finances

A freelancer's parental leave has a practical side that an employee doesn't have to deal with: clients don't just disappear because you're on leave, they move on. So start early. Decide which assignments should be wrapped up before your leave, which can potentially be paused, and which you want to keep alive with minimal effort.

Tell your most important clients well in advance and propose a solution instead of just announcing a break, for example a colleague who can take over or a date when you'll be back. Write down where projects stand and what's left to do — it makes both the handover and your own return easier. Also expect invoices for work done before your leave to be paid during the leave, and plan your cash flow accordingly.

Working part-time during your leave

Many freelancers want to take on the occasional assignment during parental leave. That's possible, but it affects how you draw parental benefit and must be reported correctly, and the rules for combining work with parental benefit are detailed. Check with Försäkringskassan how your particular setup should be handled before you say yes, not afterwards.

Also be aware that working can affect more than just that single day's benefit. Never assume a small piece of work is invisible to the system, and report all work accurately. It's both simpler and safer than trying to untangle a repayment claim later.

Two parents, one plan

Parental benefit days can be shared between parents, and when one of you freelances while the other has a permanent job, it's worth making the plan together. Differences in income, in how easily each of you can pause work, and in what each employer offers beyond the legal minimum all affect which split works best for you.

Also check what applies alongside parental benefit. Some employers pay parental salary top-ups under a collective agreement, which normally doesn't carry over to a light entrepreneurship arrangement, so ask your light entrepreneur platform what applies with them, and don't count on anything you haven't had confirmed.

The calculation applies up to an upper limit, and the details are available from Försäkringskassan.

Does a period with low income affect my parental benefit?

It can, since SGI is based on your income from work. There are rules on SGI protection that are especially relevant for parents, but the conditions vary. Ask Försäkringskassan well before your leave what applies in your situation.

Can I take on assignments during parental leave?

Yes, but it affects how you draw parental benefit and must be reported correctly. The rules for combining work with parental benefit are detailed, so check with Försäkringskassan before you accept the assignment, and report all the work you carry out.

Do I get a parental salary top-up as a light entrepreneur?

Parental salary top-ups beyond parental benefit are based on a collective agreement or an individual agreement and normally don't carry over to a light entrepreneurship arrangement. Ask your light entrepreneur platform what applies with them, and plan your finances based on what you've had confirmed in writing.
